What to Know About Driving on a Spare Tire

Temporary spare tires are designed for short-distance emergency use and should not be driven at normal highway speeds. Although the tire carries a DOT “M” speed rating, do not exceed 55 mph while using the EZ Spare Wheel. Avoid sudden acceleration, hard braking and sharp turns, and travel only as far as necessary to reach a tire shop, service center or safe location.

The M rating of 81 mph is the tire’s laboratory speed rating—not the recommended driving speed while the spare is installed. I would not say “50–60 mph,” because 60 mph conflicts with your listed 55 mph maximum.

How Long Can You Drive on the EZ Spare Wheel?

The EZ Spare Wheel is intended for temporary emergency use. Drive only as far as necessary to reach a tire shop, service center or safe location, and have your damaged tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

When possible, limit travel to approximately 50 miles and do not exceed 55 mph. Avoid extended driving, sudden acceleration, hard braking, sharp turns and overloading while the spare is installed.

Does the EZ Spare Wheel Clear My Brake Calipers?

Yes. Our 20-inch EZ Spare Wheel is designed to provide clearance for many modern performance brake systems and larger brake calipers, including compatible AMG and Brembo applications. Each spare shown through our Fitment Guide is matched to the vehicle selected, including its brake-caliper clearance and overall rolling diameter.

If your vehicle has aftermarket or modified brakes, contact us before ordering so we can confirm fitment.

Will Using the Spare Tire Affect My Vehicle’s Handling?

During our driving tests across a wide range of vehicle brands, we observed no significant handling issues when each EZ Spare Wheel was correctly matched to the vehicle. We select the appropriate spare based on the vehicle’s fitment requirements, including overall rolling diameter, to support proper operation of the drivetrain, ABS and traction-control systems.

Because it is a temporary spare, the vehicle may still feel slightly different when steering, braking or cornering. Drive cautiously, do not exceed 55 mph, and follow the instructions in your vehicle owner’s manual.

How Do I Know the EZ Spare Wheel Is the Right Size for My Car?

Simply enter your vehicle’s year, make and model in our Fitment Guide. We’ll show you the EZ Spare Wheel matched to your vehicle’s fitment requirements, including overall tire diameter, bolt pattern, hub fitment and brake-caliper clearance.

Our wheels are independently tested by TÜV Germany and ITS, and our tires meet applicable U.S. Department of Transportation requirements.

My Car Has Different Tire Sizes on the Front and Rear. Can the Spare Work on Either?

Yes. Many vehicles use different front and rear tire sizes, known as a staggered setup. When our Fitment Guide matches an EZ Spare Wheel to your vehicle, the spare is selected based on your vehicle’s fitment requirements and overall tire diameter so it can be used for a front or rear tire emergency.

Always follow your vehicle owner’s manual for spare-tire placement and temporary-use instructions, especially for all-wheel-drive or performance vehicles. Do not exceed 55 mph, and replace or repair the original tire as soon as possible.
